Shravan Month significance
Shravan month is considered as the fifth month of the year. For most Hindus, the month of Shraavana is known as the month of fasting. As a part of devotion and worshipping, Devotees are practising fasting every Monday to Lord Shiva and fasting on every Tuesday for Goddess Parvati. Fasting on Tuesday is called Mangala Gauri Vrat. According to Hindu belief, Young women experience fasting on all Shravan Mondays represent to get a good husband like Lord Shiva. Based on the traditional story, Daksha had a daughter and she sacrificed her life. She is again born as Parvati as the daughter of Himalaya King. At her young age, Parvati wished to marry Lord Shiva. During that time, Parvati took penance and Lord Shiva appeared in front of her. He was pleased with her devotion and through that she fulfilled her wish. Shraavana month is the coming of Southwest monsoon and so many festivals such as Krishna Janmashtami, Raksha Bandhan, Nag Panchami, Avani Avittam etc..are celebrating this month. There was another story behind Shravan month that is related to Samudra Manthan. One day demons and gods started to churning the milk. while doing that 14 elements came out and there was poison to destroy the universe. At last Lord Shiva swallowed that poison to save the world and due to that, his throat became blue. He got the name Neelakantha from that moment. All the Hindu devotees are worshipping Lord Shiva this month by giving milk to him. The belief is that people can acquire punyas while offering milk to Lord Shiva. After that, devotees are wearing Rudraksha and chanting mantras. On Monday, people worship Shiva Linga to earn his blessings. Gangajal, Flowers, Panchamrut, yagyopavit, fruits, sweets, agarbatti and dhoop are used to worship Lord Shiva. One of the important things that people will have to offer to Lord Shiva is Vibhuti. Some people will wear Vibhuti to show devotion to Lord Shiva. While doing puja, people have to sit in the eastern direction. After that, take some water in your hands and make a wish. Then showers the pure water over Shiva ling. Pour Panchamrut and chanting the mantra Om Namah Shivaya. Again showering the water and giving Akshat to Shiva ling. After that spot the sacred thread Bel Patra and put the agarbattis. In the end, devotees are giving sweets to Lord Shiva and asking forgiveness for the wrong doings. Chanting Shiva Chalisa and Mahamrityunjay mantra is very auspicious. Devotees are using aarti to worship Lord Shiva. One of the particular significance that was identified is Shravan month in Goa, Maharashtra, Karnataka are celebrating by experiencing a vegetarian diet.
