Katapayadi system

In our old India, there was a concept of numerical system to remember the numerical digits as words easily. It is known as Katapayadi system. It was used first in Grahacaranibandhana by Haridatta.  Some astronomical texts in kerala have provided certain planetary positions that have been coded in Katapayadi system. Consonants are designated to a number in this system from 7th century BC as

                       ka-1, kha-2, ga-3, gha-3, gnya-5

                       ca-6, cha-7, ja-8, jna-9, Na-0

                       ta-1, tta-2, da-3, da-4, na-5

                       ta-6, tha-7, dha-8, ddha-9, na-0

                       pa-1, pha-2, ba-3, bha-4, ma-5

                       ya-1, ra-2, la-3, va-4, sha-5, Sha-6, sa-7, ha-8, la-9

In this group, each letter is denoted from one to nine and the tenth letter is denoted as 0. Katapayadi system is actually writing in western way. It is considered as oldest hashing algorithm, because it can compare numbers quickly than texts in modern computers. Katapayadi method is applied to melakartha ragas also. By using katapayadi scheme, names such as kalyani raga changed to mecha kalyani and sankarabharanam becomes dheera sankarabharanam. Vowels such as "a", and "r" is attached to zero. Some important dates are also converting into codes by using katapayadi system. Most of the indications about this method is getting from kerala. Decimal separator will not represents in this method.
