Ancient Universities in India
Education has been flourishing in India since ancient times. Many Gurukuls and Universities were hubs of various scholars of India. The root of education was very strong.
Introduction
India is the most popular choice of people for pursuing higher education in Asia. India is one of the initial counties to teach subjects like archeology, mathematics, and geology. From zero to Vedic maths, all this is the gift of India to the world.
India used to be a hub of education and has a few of the most ancient universities in the world. Starting from Vedic literature to current literature, India has always shone.
Here is a list of ancient universities of India, that started the legacy of quality higher education in the country.
Nalanda
Buddhist university is the other name of Nalanda University. It is one of the most ancient universities in India which dates back to the 5th century.
Nalanda University is located in the current Bihar, which was the Magadha Kingdom at that time. It started in the fifth century and it later discontinued in the thirteenth century.
Takshashila
The University of Takshila is another ancient university of India. It dates back to the fifth century.
Although, the location where Taxila was situated is no longer a part of the country. It is a component of modern-day Pakistan on the eastern ramp of the Indus river.
Vikramshila
Vikramshila is also one of the oldest universities in India. It provided higher education to the people in ancient Bharat. The university was established in the eighth to the ninth century, in Bihar's Bhagalpur district.
It was inaugurated by the king of the Pala dynasty, Dharmapala. The reason for starting this university is that there was a reduction in opportunities for scholarships at Nalanda university.
Valabhi
Valabhi University is another Center of education in ancient India. It works as a testimony to India's rich culture and academic history. The university is well known for endorsing the cause of Hinayana Buddhism from the year 600 CE to 1200 CE.
There are speculations that Valabhi was considered a rival of Nalanda University. The ancient university was situated in the capital of Maitraka. The place was also a prominent sight of trade-in Saurashtra, which is the present-day Vallabhipur District in Gujarat.
Somapura
Dharmapala, the ruler of the Pala dynasty, established Somapura University. The university flourished for almost 400 years till the 12th century. Out of the 27 acres of land covered by the university, 21 acres was the main complex only.
Somapura University was an education center for Bauddha Dharma(Buddhism), Jina Dharma( Jainism), and Sanatana Dharma(Hinduism). It is popularly known as one of the largest and best Buddhist monasteries in the Indian SubContinent. The teachings of the University have influenced these 5 communities immensely.
Jagaddala
Jagaddala Mahavira was a popular Buddhist monastery that was founded by King Ramapala of the Pala dynasty. It is a seat of learning in Varendra which is currently in North Bengal in Bangladesh. Jagaddala is considered the largest construction work done by the Pala dynasty.
Odantapuri
Odantapuri University was the second oldest university after Nalanda University. In the 8th century, Gopala of the Pala dynasty founded the Odantapuri University. The ruins of the ancient university were located on Hiranya Parbat in Bihar Sharif. This place is also known as Odantapura Vihar or Odantapuri Buddiest Mahavira.
Pushpagiri
Pushpagiri is located in Odisha's Jajpur district. It is a historical Buddhist monastic site of ancient India.
Although philosophers such as Dineshchandra sircar and B.S.L Hanumantha Rao recognize the Pushpagiri University with the current Pushpagiri temple complex in the place called Cuddapah District of Andhra Pradesh.
Conclusion
These are a few of the ancient universities or education centers of ancient India or Bharat. They actively use the preserved institutions as research centers by various organizations and for tourism. However, some of these are only present in written format. Hence we can't see any physical evidence
Most of the invaders have destroyed many old-age universities in ancient India. Various travelers and scholars like Xuanzang have provided insights into these historical places of India.
Moreover, Many scriptures and books are testimonies to the possible presence of these universities in times as early as the BCE.
