Tithi is the lunar day of the Hindu calendar. It is not a fixed 24-hour clock day. It is measured by how far the Moon has moved away from the Sun: every 12° of separation is one tithi. A full lunar month therefore has thirty tithis — fifteen while the Moon is waxing (Shukla paksha) and fifteen while it is waning (Krishna paksha).
Almanacs almost always answer “what is today’s tithi?” with the tithi that is running at local sunrise. That is why this page keys every city to its own sunrise, and why places on different longitudes can briefly disagree when a tithi is changing.
Astronomically, tithi = (longitude of Moon − longitude of Sun) ÷ 12°. When the difference is 0° you are at Amavasya (new moon); at 180° you are at Purnima (full moon). Because the Moon’s speed varies, a tithi can last roughly 19–26 hours. That is also why some civil mornings inherit the previous day’s tithi, and why a tithi can occasionally be skipped between two sunrises.

Festivals, vrats, and many samskaras are scheduled by tithi rather than by the civil date. Ekadashi, Purnima, Amavasya, Chaturthi, and Ashtami are among the most widely watched. Matching the correct sunrise tithi for your city is therefore more useful than copying a pan-India “today” graphic from social media.
For muhurta (electional timing), astrologers often combine tithi with weekday, nakshatra, yoga, and karana — which is why this page also surfaces those companion fields for the primary city.
Tithi is a lunar day in the Hindu calendar. It is measured by the Moon’s angular distance from the Sun — each 12° of separation is one tithi. A lunar month has 30 tithis: 15 in the bright fortnight (Shukla paksha) and 15 in the dark fortnight (Krishna paksha).
Most almanacs take the tithi that is current at local sunrise as “today’s tithi.” Because sunrise differs by city, neighbouring places can briefly disagree when a tithi is changing. This page follows the sunrise convention for each city.
The Moon–Sun angle is the same globally at a given moment, but “today’s tithi” depends on local sunrise and the local calendar date. New York, London, and Delhi can therefore show different sunrise tithis on what looks like the same civil date.
Shukla paksha is the waxing fortnight from Amavasya to Purnima (bright half). Krishna paksha is the waning fortnight from Purnima to Amavasya (dark half). Festival calendars and vrats are tied to both the tithi name and its paksha.
A tithi lasts about 19–26 hours, not exactly 24. When it ends after sunrise the next day, the same tithi covers two civil mornings (adhika). When it starts and ends between two sunrises, a civil morning can skip it (kshaya). That is normal lunar-calendar behaviour.
Ekadashi is widely observed as a Vishnu vrat. Purnima and Amavasya bookend the fortnights and host many festivals. Chaturthi is linked with Ganesha, Ashtami with Durga and Krishna Janmashtami, and Navami with Rama Navami — among many regional observances.
Sunrise tithi is computed from Vedic astronomical ephemeris for each city. Printed regional panchangs can differ by a few minutes depending on ayanamsa and sunrise convention — confirm with your family or temple tradition for ceremonies and vrats.
