What is nakshatra?

Nakshatra is a lunar mansion — one of twenty-seven equal divisions of the ecliptic, each spanning 13°20′. The Moon spends roughly a day in each mansion. Almanacs almost always answer “what is today’s nakshatra?” with the mansion that is running at local sunrise, which is why this page keys every city to its own sunrise.

Your janma nakshatra is different: that is the mansion the Moon occupied at the moment of birth, and it anchors naming, dasha timing, and matchmaking. Today’s nakshatra is simply the transit mansion for the civil day.

How is nakshatra calculated?

Sidereal longitude of the Moon is divided into 27 segments starting from Ashwini at 0° Aries (Lahiri ayanamsa on this site). Each mansion has four padas of 3°20′. The Moon’s varying speed means a nakshatra can last a little under or over a day, so it may cover two sunrises or change between them.

Why nakshatra matters

Muhurta (electional astrology), travel, naming, and some vrats prefer or avoid certain nakshatras. Birth-chart work leans heavily on the Moon’s mansion. Matching the correct sunrise nakshatra for your city is more useful than copying a pan-India “today” graphic.

Astrologers often read nakshatra together with tithi, weekday, yoga, and karana — which is why this page also surfaces those companion fields for the primary city.

Common questions about nakshatra

What is nakshatra?

Nakshatra is a lunar mansion — one of 27 (sometimes counted as 28) equal divisions of the ecliptic. The Moon moves through roughly one nakshatra each day. Janma nakshatra is the mansion the Moon occupied at birth; “today’s nakshatra” is usually the one current at local sunrise.

How is today’s nakshatra decided?

Most Hindu almanacs take the nakshatra running at local sunrise as the day’s nakshatra. Because sunrise differs by city, places can briefly disagree when the Moon is changing mansions.

Is nakshatra the same as rashi (zodiac sign)?

No. Rashi divides the sky into 12 signs of 30° each. Nakshatra divides it into 27 mansions of 13°20′ each. Four padas (quarters) make up one nakshatra, and nine padas span one rashi.

What is a nakshatra lord?

Each nakshatra is ruled by a planet in the Vimshottari dasha scheme (Ketu, Venus, Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury, repeating). That lord is used in dasha timing and in matching for marriage and muhurta.

Why does nakshatra matter day to day?

Muhurta (electional astrology), naming, travel, and some vrats prefer or avoid certain nakshatras. Birth-chart work also leans heavily on the Moon’s nakshatra. Checking the sunrise nakshatra for your city is more reliable than a generic national graphic.

How long does a nakshatra last?

On average a little under a day (the Moon’s mean motion is about 13° per day). Actual duration varies with the Moon’s speed, so a nakshatra can spill across two civil mornings or change between two sunrises.

Nakshatra for the coming days

Sunrise nakshatra is computed from Vedic astronomical ephemeris for each city. Printed regional panchangs can differ by a few minutes depending on ayanamsa and sunrise convention — confirm with your family or temple tradition for ceremonies and muhurta.
