Takshashila - Ancient university of india

The University of Takshila is another ancient university of India. It dates back to the fifth century. 

Although, the location where  Taxila was situated is no longer a part of the country. It is a component of modern-day Pakistan on the eastern ramp of the Indus river.

People believe that the place was discovered during the period of Ramayana. Valmiki Ramayana suggests that the city was founded by Bharata who was the son of mother Kekayi. 

Taxila was an important destination of learning for the Persians and of India's subcontinent around 515 BCE. The junction of the central business route was crowded with Persians,  Greeks, and Scythians.

Many believe it to be the oldest university in ancient India. But there are opinions like Taxila was not a full-fledged university. Since there was no appropriately built infrastructure for studies like lecture halls and residential sections in Taxila, unlike Nalanda University.

Taxila played an important role in stimulating patriot values amongst Indians against the incursions of west nomads and other kingdoms. The Taxila university of ancient India provided education and knowledge in subjects like Science, particularly Medicine and skills studies. The university taught both non-religious and spiritual subjects like astrology and archery.

Just like the Nalanda University, Taxila also has connections with Buddhism. It has harbored many Jakarta Buddhist literature here. The university was famous all over the world. More than twenty thousand students from countries like China, Syria, and Greece heeded the ancient university. 

In the fifth century, the devastation of Toramana seems to have had a huge impact on the shutdown of the University. Many legendary personalities of ancient India have taught at Taxila University. One of them is Chanakya, the effective prime minister of the Maurya dynasty.

Vasubandhu, the founder of Tibetan Buddhism along with the Chinese vagabond Xuan Zang, kumaralata the creator of sautantrika school too taught here.
